Cherryland is a district located in between San Leandro and Hayward to the north and south correspondingly. With a population of a little over 14,000 residents, this town is referred to as a designated place for census collection. A census designated place is a concentration of population recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. Because Cherryland is an unincorporated city, it is still governed by Alameda County. The current of the San Lorenzo Creek still flows through the neighborhood’s limits. Although the meaning of this small community’s name is unknown, it’s fair to assume that it has something to do with the agricultural roots of the region.

Brief History

Cherryland stretches throughout the vast acreage of orchards formerly owned by San Lorenzo Developer: William Meek. Meek, often referred to as the “first farmer” of Alameda County, built a Victorian house in 1869 that still remains preserved by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District. What is now commonly known as the “Meek Mansion” sits on a 10 acre plot of land on Hampton Street. His beautiful home serves as a reminder of the community’s rich history and its vital role in the development of surrounding regions.
