History of Golden Gate Oakland

This region was originally the 150 acreage of Klinkerville named after Charles Alexander Klinker. Klinker was a German immigrant who managed the town’s affairs in the late 19th century. In 1888, it was named Golden Gate because of its beautiful sights of the city and Golden Gate Bridge. By 1897, the community became part of Oakland. The Southern Pacific Commuter Trains and the Herzog Tract mobilized the residents. In 1982, the East Bay Negro Historical Society was invited to contribute an African American collection in its local Golden Gate Branch Library. The final partnership occurred in 1994 when the Northern California Center for Afro-American History & Life collaborated with the City of Oakland to create the African American Museum & Library at Oakland. It is now located in the former Charles S. Greene Library, one of the momentous Carnegie Libraries of its time.
