Placed just south of Mills College is the unusually diverse geographical region of Millsmont. Burrowed between Seminary and 73rd Avenue, the beautiful foothills overlooking Oakland flats and the three main bridges of the Bay. Just east of Oakdale Avenue, one is surrounded by nature compared to the western end filled with California Bungalow homes.
Millsmont was originally developed as an escape from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. Being largely wooded, it became a perfect place to buy land and vacation houses. This local resort experienced a mass migration of refugees that survived the earthquake of 1906. Overtime, features were made and now serve as an abode of first-time homeowners, old-time residents, and students/staff of nearby Mills College.
This is a perfect getaway for nature lovers. Leona Canyon and the King Estates Open Space attracts wildlife such as vultures, wild turkeys and owls. However, there is not much to offer for people’s other interests until arriving at Macarthur. If you jump onto 580, you can conveniently reach the Laurel Shopping District not too far away. Additionally, a meet up takes place every Friday morning called Coffee @ The Curb as part of the Get Goes Mobile Café project. Nonetheless, this neighborhood is more accustomed to audiences seeking peace and solitude.
The nearest schools are Burbank Preschool Center, Burckhalter Elementary School, Millsmont Charter Academy, Explore College Preparatory Middle School, Oakland Unity High and of course Mills College. This college is a sovereign liberal arts and sciences program for both men and women. The Princeton Review ranked it as one of the top eco-friendly colleges in the U.S. 4 years in a row. It is number 6 among top schools in the West and offers an exclusive music program based off an “experimental” curriculum.
Oakland enjoys a reputation for great quality schools, including public, charter & private. For more educational options, school ratings and reviews, visit Greatschools.org
You would be better off driving from point A to B in this region. It has scarce bus routes that generally cater to students and minimal stops for commuters. Sitting just below 580 makes it ideal for those that are mobile.
It’s very important to keep an eye on the market. Housing prices can ebb and flow due to economic, seasonal and local factors. For a true understanding of your property’s value or determining the “right” price to offer for a home, consult with a Realtor. Johanna provides free marketing appraisals in Millsmont.
