The sleepy community of Ridges is a beautiful neighborhood in the hills of Castro Valley. Located on the northeastern end, it stretches a little over 1.1 square miles with nearly 500 residents. Its rather “groovy” architecture showcases the brilliance of early land developer, Joseph Eichler.
Many of these homes were constructed in the 1960-1970’s with a more modern approach. It was these styles that were eventually deemed as the “California standard” because of its flat roof tops and unique windows. One of Eichler’s famous strategies was to “bring the outside in” with its huge interior space, sky lighting and floor to ceiling windows that could overlook patios, hills and even entire cities. Although many homes were designed this way, some still hold true to a more rancher appearance.
This is a perfect location for the nature advocate. The entire region is surrounded by trees and green hills. Greenridge Park is its local recreation area covering the entire hilltop. It spreads outward with trails for bicyclists and joggers. It has an expansive play area for kids and a field for picnics. It also features a full-sized basketball court. Just a word of advice: because it’s on the top of a hill, make sure to bring a jacket for it can become very windy.
Canyon Public Middle School is just one of the two middle schools in its district. Schooling over a thousand students, it also offers technical training and adult programs. The school’s policies have served them well with an overall rating of 8 out of 10. The campus has been reviewed over 20 times by Great Schools and averaged 4 out of 5 on a consistent basis.
There is no public transit service in this community but takes approximately 10-15 minutes by car to reach BART stations, highways and downtown Castro Valley. People mostly depend on vehicles or bikes to get around. The average time to commute for work takes approximately 30-35 minutes.
