Mount Eden was established in the mid-19th century by a group of farmers migrating from out of state. It was named after their hometown Mount Eden, Kentucky. Nowadays, it is a blooming community known for its beautiful parks and historical landmarks. The neighborhood’s environment is enriched with local ecological reserves and the vivid regional shoreline. Residents of this area are privileged with quality academics and phenomenal local government. Moreau Catholic High School is just one of many institutions that have complemented this neighborhood’s reputation. Mount Eden strongly supports homegrown businesses and encourages residents to shop/eat locally.
Mount Eden, formally known as Eden Township, was discovered in 1850 by farmers seeking to strike rich from California’s gold rush. It only made sense for them to name the newfound territory after their hometown in Kentucky: Mount Eden. Legend goes that they hammered a sign reading “Mt. Eden” in between two trees and from there, a town was born. Mount Eden had a booming economy of shipping and salt-harvesting industries. Due to fierce competition from road and train productions, the shipping industry plunged in the 1930’s. By the late 1950’s, the town officially became a part of Hayward. However, the name of this community still lives on in the form of churches, cemeteries, medical centers and schools. The historic pinnacle of Mount Eden is now a highway exchange between interstate 880 and route 92. It is currently home to nearly 4,000 residents.
Mount Eden High School has as an API (Academic Performance Index) of 5. This 4 year comprehensive system teaches over 2000 students while managing its 32 different native speaking languages. Approximately a quarter of Mt. High’s graduates attend a four year university while 65 percent enroll in community colleges. On another note, one student from Moreau Catholic High School won the courthouse journalist competition at the state mock trial contest earlier this year. The community of Mount Eden values the importance of good education. For more educational options, school ratings and reviews for Hayward visit Greatschools.org
