This flamboyant neighborhood is settled a little over a mile away from downtown Oakland. Named after its primary street, Piedmont Avenue remains the commerce and cultural heart of its region. Although the days of streetcars are long gone, residents haven’t transitioned from its warm community feel. It has a vast selection of coffee shops, book stores and restaurants.
Once the streetcars were introduced in the early 20th century, Piedmont Avenue took advantage of its implications. The first Key System Streetcar was created on Piedmont and 41st but descended shortly after the auto boom decades later. The region’s population dramatically grew after the 1906 earthquake and soon became a dominant community of industry and business.
This area caters greatly to the artistic community. Every 3rd Thursday, Piedmont hosts an art walk featuring many local and regional artists/musicians. It has an abundance of art galleries where people can view ceramics, sculptures and paintings. In addition, murals along 41st depict significant points of the city’s history. For those night time pleasure-seekers, Piedmont offers a promising scene of dining choices. A high end venue known as Commis has been recognized as one of the best restaurants in its area. Expect to get a sophisticated entrée of Calf’s liver and Parsley with a bottle of the finest Merlot. For desert you can stop by Fenton’s Creamery and enjoy their large Sundaes that will make you scream for ice cream. Lastly, George Kayes is for the younger audience with happy hour from 3-6 in a social atmosphere of entertainment.
