According to a local reviewer, “Diversity, openness, and acceptance are at the heart of the Upper Laurel, making it a true microcosm of what makes Oakland great as a modern American city.” Indeed this community is making a turn for the best from its obsolete California Bungalows to a more present feel.
This district was either named after the “Laurel Grove Park” residential tract or from the street car company “Key Route Heights”. Although, the actual designation is unclear, the district has a golden history of expansion and innovation. The Laurel district witnessed an intense level of growth during World War II. I-580 was created to rid Macarthur Boulevard of its previous duties as U.S. Highway 50. By the 21st century, a project to brighten up the artistic value of this area was executed by the Golden Associates. Thanks to them, “arts and crafts” lettering of the word “Laurel” appeared all over the place.
Upper Laurel is home to some of the best nature spots in the bay. A simple walk will lead you to Joaquin River, Roberts, and Redwood Parks. The Chabot Space and Science Center is nearby as well. Mills College is great for walking your dog or to simply stroll through for a breath of fresh air. In recent years, newer restaurants targeting younger audiences have popped up in addition to a local yoga studio. Although it’s small in size, its friendly customer service is what kept them in business. Furthermore, there are several eateries along Masterson Street such as the Laurel Lounge where guests can watch the game and socialize with drinks.
