Remodeling a 1970's Condo in Alameda California

Before, during and after video of a 1970's Mid Century Condominium remodel in Alameda, California One of my favorite before and after projects is a modest 1960 - 1970's 773-square foot 1 bedroom 1 bath condominium near the beach in Alameda, California. At first glance, most people would wonder why “Uninhabitable” was the keyword descriptor that caught my attention in the realtor's property description. First time buyers and real estate investors should look beyond the dust and dirt for a potential dream home.

The Pluses:

High peaked “Penthouse” ceilings, lots of windows, large original hanging globe light fixtures, large living room, spacious deck, multiple closets. and an efficient floor plan. Basically the best unit in the building

The Minuses:

Home to a deceased hoarder. The kitchen was an avocado disaster, ancient wall paper was everywhere, there were scary looking burn marks on wall outlets, the floors were either stripped down to the cement sub-floor or graced by 45-year-old laminate, not to mention neither the plumbing nor the electrical system were in working order.

2 months, two contractors, and over $50,000 later, it was transformed into a bright and airy space that combined the best of this condo’s cool Mid Century modern bones with tasteful updates that made it desirable.

Keys to the transformation:

  • Warm and cool tone paint palette throughout
  • Stainless kitchen appliances and granite counter tops
  • Bathroom granite counter tops, sinks, faucets, mirrors, vanity, and towel bars
  • New Flooring throughout including bamboo, Melamine and carpeting
  • A combination of original hanging globe fixtures and updated bathroom fixtures
  • Electrical updates for safety and utility including a thermostat, heater vents, and switch plates.

All that remains are the original mid century modern globe light fixtures.
