Upper B Street has the best of both worlds mixing common aspects of a city with humble qualities of suburban living. Settled in the heart of downtown Hayward, small families gravitate towards this region for livability, cost effectiveness and easy highway access. East of Interstate 238, this historical part of Hayward has nearby parks, a handful of bar and grills and shops. In addition, Upper B Street is considerably more secure with it being over 50 percent safer than other California neighborhoods. There are also 3 churches within walking distance making this community ideal for the spiritually dedicated.

Parks

San Felipe Park located on D Street grants visitors with a calm place to barbecue, socialize and party. It’s a perfect place for family gatherings. With a mass amount of space to flourish, residents frequently bring their dogs for a traditional game of fetch. Don Castro Regional Recreation Area is the biggest park in the district. There is a lagoon for people to swim and walking trails for exercise or observation. Its location is tailored for jogging and mountaineering while still offering family-friendly avenues through its various play structures. Although free to enter, there are fees to bring a dog or access the beach. You also may be subject to parking fees on weekends and holidays. Due to its convenient entry to a main highway, the average commute time is 10-20 minutes.

Leisure/Shopping

Upper B Street is known for its local businesses and vintage merchandise. Vintage and Modern Resale Clothing, located on B and Foothill, has a mass selection of exclusive attire at reasonable prices. People have been known to go out of their way just to pay a visit. According to Yelp, visitors have given it an overall rating of 4.5 stars. Vintage Alley is another unique company that rings true to an old-fashioned business approach. Its store combines clothing merchandise with a “groovy” styled salon; truly one of a kind. If you’re into fresh American food and a friendly environment, come chow down at Val’s Burgers. Known for their infamous “Papa” burgers and large onion rings, Val’s is surely a place to remember. Be warned though, Val’s Burgers only accepts cash. Just down the street is a popular Chinese Cuisine called Eastern Winds No 2. Known for its non-greasy texture and traditional cooking methods, this restaurant delivers quality service like none other. Customers get free crab wontons with every order of $20 or more. What about the night life? Don’t worry, the uppers have you covered. Curly’s Place, located on Kelly and Center, attracts local beer connoisseurs with its jukebox tunes and friendly bartenders. Once you’re full and feeling good, peep the latest shows at Century Theatres. Also, don’t forget that this neighborhood hosts a local farmers market every Saturday from 9am-1pm.
